Rheinsteig, Germany, May 2025

We used the early May state holidays and the cheap flights to Frankfurt as an opportunity to do a brief section of the Rheinsteig, the long distance hiking path going along the Rhein river in Germany.

The starting town of Rüdesheim am Rhein was easily reachable by train from Frankfurt airport. There was quite a festive mood in the train, with the locals drinking wine and engaging us in conversation which was somewhat limited by our knowledge of the German language.

By the time we started hiking, it was sunny and hot, and we hiked past the Niederwalddenkmal monument and then made some navigational errors which led us to a detour through steep vineyards.

Still, we arrived to Lorsch am Rhein just fine, and had dinner at a nice local restaurant.

The next day had us walk from Lorsch am Rhein to Oberwesel, crossing with a ferry at Kaub.

We hiked past Burg Schönburg where one of us was staying and reached Oberwesel.

The next day we hiked to Sankt Goar where we also Burg Rheinfels.

On the last day we decided to get back to Frankfurt early, by train from Sankt Goarshausen, and visit the amazing Städel art museum.

Overall, it was a nice, short get-away. The weather was good, ranging from 16C to 28C with a bit of rain and a fair amount of clear, sunny skies.

The views towards Rhein river and the medieval towns near it were beautiful, but also consistent along the whole route, to the point that they are conflated together in my memories.
